Types of Work Visas Available to Foreign Workers in Malta

Foreign nationals who intend to travel to Malta to work have a few options when it comes to visas:

 SHORT-STAY VISA, OR C VISA:The short-stay visa is a type of Schengen visa, which means it allows foreign nationals to enter multiple countries within the Schengen area. The C visa allows the holder to remain in Malta for up to three months regardless of how many entries are allowed.

NATIONAL LONG-STAY VISA, OR D VISA:The D visa allows foreign nationals to stay in Malta for more than three months. This is the visa foreign employees will need to live and work in Malta for an extended period of time.

In addition to a long-stay visa, foreign employees will need a work permit. In Malta, this permit is known as an employment license.

REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN A WORK VISA IN MALTA

• A duly completed visa application form

• A cover letter stating the purpose of the applicant’s trip to Malta

• A valid passport with at least two blank pages

• Two passport photos

• Proof that the applicant has travel medical insurance coverage for the entire Schengen area

• An employment contract with a company based in Malta

• Proof of accommodations for the duration of the applicant’s time in Malta

• Evidence of sufficient financial means to cover the entire period of the applicant’s stay

PROCESS:

1. 1. Assessment, Retention & issuance of Work Permit

Step 1: Assessment –Important criteria and Documents required (Coloured scanned copies) for assessment

1. Updated Resume, singed on each page by the applicant
2. Complete passport with cover (Should be valid for at least 15 months)
3. Candidates should be currently working
4. Passport-size photograph
5. Residency documents for applicants residing outside their home country
6. COVID-19 fully-vaccination certification – Approved Vaccines: Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty; AstraZeneca Vaxzevria COVID-19 vaccine (COVISHIELD); Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 vaccine; Moderna Spikevax COVID-19 vaccine

Screening:

This interview will be conducted online. This session will be attended by the applicant, our facilitator, and a member from assessment team and one employee from the respective branch. 

After screening:

Step 2: Interview

Step 3: Registration

Step 4: Job Offer, known as Documents of job received from our facilitator

Step 5: Documents of job are signed by the applicant and sent back to our facilitator

At this stage, Work Permit application fee payment needs to be paid to facilitator

Step 6: The employer will apply for Work Permit at Identity Malta

Step 7: Receive a filling confirmation from the facilitator

PROCESSING TIME:4 to 8 Weeks

Step 7: Work Permit issued – Letter of approval is valid for 180 days

2. Visa Filling – Additional Documents required for visa filling:

1. Letter of approval
2. All copies of documents provided at the first stage – signed by employer
3. Invitation letter

Step 1: Initiate Appointment procedure with VFS/Malta Embassy

Step 2:  Book accommodation (Booking.com)

Step 3:  Arrange Travel itinerary and travel insurance for at least 3 months

Step 4:  Apply for the Visa

Step 5:  Upon Visa approval, needs to cancel booking on the website Booking.com

 

Total Process: 6 Months (on average)

Additional Charges: – Upon visa approval, Applicant needs to pay following additional fees:

(1)   Before traveling to Malta:

• 270 Euros: Pay to Employee Representative for medical check-up in Malta
• 170 Euros: Health insurance

(2)   After Reaching Malta:

• 15 Euros: Notary
• 10 Euros: Local Calling Card
• 25 Euros: Local Public Transport Card
• 35 Euros: Food handling
• 20 Euros: Airport Transfer to accommodation

(3)   Accommodation Charges:

• Shared accommodation: 200 Euros (Average)
• 1 month deposit needs to be paid in advance
• 50% deposit to be paid to the agent
• Overall, applicant needs to take along at least 500 Euros for accommodation costs

After landing in Malta, applicant needs to adhere to quarantine requirements (at his own expense) implemented by the Maltese Government on that specific time period.

Stage 1 Retention after positive assessment – USD 1500 + Tax

Stage 2 On Getting Work Permit – USD 1000 + Tax. USD 500 non-refundable even if work permit not granted.

Stage 3 On getting Visa – USD 1000 + Tax. USD 1500 non-refundable even if visa is rejected.
